Was thinking about this from playing re2make. Really more in the original, Mr.X has a llt of similarities to SA-X. It's indestructible and shows up in some srt scripted parts, just specifcially wanting to hunt you down. In the remake, it adds the footstep mechanic which really reminded me of it.

A lot of people love the SA-X in fusion, but just think of if they changed things up, level design too, to actually make SAX basically the fusion version of re2make Mr.X. Can actually "go through the whole gfs", you are only safe in elevator/save/adam transmission rooms, and it can keep chasing you throughout anywhere else until you either get there or far enough way and hide. It would be a big change from the original, but would up that scare factor. One of the main reasons the SA-X is so scary is that samus is the scariest thing in the metroid universe, so only another samus could actually be really scary. It's hard to actually make metroid horror because of that.

Alternatively, prime 4 could have some type of mr.x type stalker at some point in the game.

I haven't played RE2make but anything to make the SA-X segments more dynamic would be great. They're really well done the first time you play the game, but since they're almost entirely scripted they lose most of their effectiveness on replays.

This would only work if they basically redid the entire game so it wasn't linear and they gave you multiple escape routes to get away from the SA-X especially since there's 10 of them on the station according to Adam.

Keep the encounters as is, just make the AI a little smarter this time instead of running left and right aimlessly.

  • #5
Wouldn't that kinda ruin the exploration aspect? I don't want to imagine myself hunting missile and health packs while a 'Mr.X' is chasing Samus throughout the entire planet/space station.

Wouldn't mind an enemy like that though, but make it like in Prey: it doesn't chase you forever, but it spawns randomly and follows you until you hide and it loses interest in Samus.

Fusion already is light on exploration, so I figure they may as well go all out to make it the true horror metroid that people want.

For real.

I wouldn't change anything about it. I felt hunted enough by the other enemies in the game that adding a constant dread of encountering the SA-X would be extreme. Maybe add it as a bonus mode?

Sure. SA-X is wildly overrated for the 3-4 times you run away from it in a scripted sequence.

Sorry that's a fucking awful idea. Mr X's expansion ruined the puzzle solving aspect of the remake and overall made it too repetitive, was very annoying. As well as the overdurable zombies, the remake wasn't very fun. Metroid games should also be about experimenting with the enviroment, like finding secret power ups and that experimentation would be ruined if you're always on the run.

It's really good the first time playing, but you literally only have one option, so it loses all tension on replays.

It's an interesting idea. I'd probably make it a bit less dynamic, though. Part of what makes the SA-X sequences so memorable and terrifying is how well-structured they are. So the middle ground is multiple structured SA-X sequences, with only some of them happening in each playthrough at random.

This, though...

One of the main reasons the SA-X is so scary is that samus is the scariest thing in the metroid universe, so only another samus could actually be really scary. It's hard to actually make metroid horror because of that.

Can't say I agree here. Samus isn't scary. The world she exists in is.

Metroid Fusion doesn't need a remake is perfect as it is

Instead i want a new powerful, stalker enemy in Prime 4/Metroid 5

Yes yes. One of the best memories I have in gaming is SA-X chasing me in Metroid Fusion. The SA-X theme, level design (trap blocks that makes you stuck when you run) during the chasing are tension as fuck. It will be awesome if we have dynamic encounter like Mr.X, will be interested with Metroid strong level design since you will meed to plan safe route to avoid SA-X

It's kind of hard to really match the comic terror of Mr. X poking his head through an open door like he's a college roommate asking what you want at McDonald's when the game is in 2D.

I mean in prime 1, there is a log telling every space pirate to be ready for "the hunter". If the pirates are scared of samus, who is scarier than that?

I wouldn't take an acknowledgement that they can't have blind confidence in their ability to destroy someone as a sign of fear, just a sign of being sensible tacticians. And certainly not an indication that the franchise is difficult to position as a horror franchise, just that it's not been a priority.

See the problem is Samus is long established as being the end all be all in basically all metroid lore.

And her greatest rivals just happen to be copies of her.

Hard to sell horror for Champion of the Galaxy, Destroyer of Worlds, Crippler of Empires.

I'd say her greatest rival is the giant alien dragon that seemingly won't fucking die. But I'm sure that Ridley totes quakes in his boots over her.
Characters like Ridley and their behaviour towards her betray the notion that any of them are afraid of her; if anything, they underestimate her.

I'd call Ridley her most iconic rival. Guy has a shitty track record against her.

Metroid Fusion is far from perfect lmao

But SA-X was immediately the first thing I thought of when I played RE2 Remake.

Partially.

I think they should add a lot more scripted SA-X events, but randomise them as to which one you encounter during a playthrough.
SA-X was absurdly overpowered while you were still weak to ice, and non scripted encounters may make you die too easily, and on the flipside I don't want them weakening SA-X at all.

I legit think the game is perfect. Or close enough.

And everything people say is wrong with it is what's lacking with other metroidvanias

Annoying narrative that doesn't shut up and a game that constantly tells you where to go? I'd rather other Metroidvanias not have that.

SA-X is doing its own thing and has its own objective and is a thing to be avoided. Its not actively hunting Samus down at every possible second but will not hesitate to do so if she happens to cross its path. I think that would just completely change the entire mystery and point of those encounters.

I mean the game as a true metroidvania is very far from perfect. As a metroidvania-styled 2d action game it's great. It doesn't get close to super metroid, zero mission or really even samus returns as a metroidvania.

No. Having an omnipresent threat would detract from the experience. SA-X works in Fusion because it's a crafted sequences that happens at specific moments to maximize the tension. Mr. X in REmake 2 works but eventually just becomes a mechanic that you overcome. By the end of that game I wasn't afraid of Mr X any longer because I had long figured out how to avoid him.

You are meant to exist in the space of a Metroid game and explore and find secrets far longer than you spend on locations of RE2. Having a forever threat would improve that experience.

I mean, should a remake fix SA-X's heavily exploitable AI? Yes, of course they should. But they shouldn't do a Mr. X.

Ridley is her only enemy that we know of that both is very intelligent and knows about samus. Everything else is mindless/low intelligence and/or doesn't even know samus. So ridley is the exception.

Dark samus also technically, but it's basically just a mix of pure ohazon and being a metroid still, so I don't count it.

I like this concept.

I also think they should heavily redesign the end of Fusion; the way you defeat the SA-X and the bizarre homage to Super Metroid's ending against the Omega Metroid both feel very undercooked.

Most people wouldn't consider the narrative of fusion that great. It's fine, but not excellent. Plus lore in the prime style is the best way to tell stories in metroid. It's all optional.

Well, fair enough. Can't agree at all with it. Still think fusion is great for what it is, but don't want more new games in the series like it.

Also, you said metroidvania first....so.

To the level of Mr. X would probably be too much, but certainly more SA-X appearances would be welcome. It will be a long time before that game is remade though, if ever.

Great game though, right up there with Prime and Super. Not quite as good, but a very well done take for the franchise.
